The Rollright Trust is pleased to announce the launch of a photographic competition sponsored by
Ricoh Cameras UK and Morris Photographic Centre Chipping Norton, Oxon.

Subject Classes

Entries are being invited for up to 6 images taken by amateur photographers for images within the following classes:
A. ‘Rollright through the Seasons’ (the Stones in the landscape and seasonal variation)
B. ‘Living Stones’ (people/activities/events/visitors/performances etc)
C. ‘Myth & Mystery’ (to include fantastical/artistic/manipulated images)
D. Under 16s (although children can enter other classes)

Entry Format

Images may be entered either digitally or as prints or slides, accompanied by a completed official entry form. Entry forms will be made available shortly, and can be downloaded from the Rollright Trust website or can be sent on request.

Closing Date

1 October 2010 (ie. in advance of Rollright Forum 2010)

Prizes
(max one prize per entrant – with the exception of the overall winner)

  • The judges will select an overall winner, runner-up and two highly commended entries from the four class winners. Those selected will receive prizes kindly provided by our sponsors, Ricoh Cameras UK and Morris Photographic Centre Morris Photographic Centre: a Ricoh R10 camera, a camera bag, a tripod and a half day photography course with local photographer Sarah Howard (http://www.imageseen.co.uk).
  • The winners of Classes A, B and C will receive a signed copy of Stone Circles of the British Isles by Aubrey Burl, Patron of the Rollright Trust and, together with a runner-up in each class, will receive one year’s free membership of the Friends of the Rollright Trust and a copy of the Rollright Trust Calendar 2011. 
  • The winner of the under 16s class (D) will win a day on a training excavation at Dorchester-upon-Thames and, together with the two best runners-up, will receive a year’s free membership of the Young Archaeologists’ Club and a copy of the Rollright Trust Calendar 2011.

Display
Winning picture will form the front cover of the Rollright Trust calendar 2011 and may, if suitable, be printed as a postcard for sale at the site.  Other winning pictures (plus any others that the judges choose) will be included in the calendar.  They will also appear on the Trust website and in the local press.
A condition of entry is that the Rollright Trust retains the right to use images in displays, promotion of the Trust, and as postcards, calendars, guidebooks etc – with full acknowledgement of the photographer, who retains copyright, in each case.

Rollright Stones Photographic Competition 2010 Rules


This competition is open to anyone for whom photography is NOT their principal profession or occupation. Trustees of the Rollright Trust and employees of Ricoh Cameras UK and Morris Photographic Centre and their immediate families (and those of the panel) are not eligible to enter.

Subject and classes

  1. The subject of the competition is the Rollright Stones consisting of The Kings Men stone circle, The King Stone standing stone and The Whispering Knights burial chamber (Grid Ref SP 296308).
  2. Entrants can submit up to six photographs either as prints, slides or digital images, in colour or black and white. Each photograph must be entered into one of the following classes:
    • A Rollright through the Seasons (pictures showing the site at particular times of the year)
    • B Living Stones (pictures which reflect people and activities connected with the Stones)
    • C Myth & Mystery (artistic/digitally enhanced images capturing the Stones’ folklore and mystery) And, while anyone may enter all of the above classes, there is also one for young people:
    • D Under 16s (any picture within the above categories if the photographer is under 16 years old)

    Format and submission of entries

  3. Images may be cleaned to remove spots or scratches and adjusted for brightness and contrast, but should not otherwise be manipulated unless entered for Class C.

  5. Each entry must be submitted as per the official entry form for receipt before midnight (GMT) Friday 1 October 2010. Entries will not be returned and the organisers accept no responsibility for any postal loss, damage or delay.
  6. Ownership and copyright of images and their use by the Rollright Trust

  7. Entrants must be the sole owner of copyright in all images entered and should have obtained permission of any people featured or their parents/guardians if under 16.
  8. Images submitted must not have been sold for publication, or won or been a runner up in any other photographic competition, or entered for competitions where the results are still pending.
  9. The copyright of all entries remains with the photographer, but a condition of entry is that the Rollright Trust has the unfettered right to publish and display any images submitted to inform the public, promote the Trust’s work, and generate revenue from postcards, calendars, guidebooks etc.
  10. No fees will be payable, but for every image used the photographer will be fully acknowledged stating their copyright.  All revenue will be used for the Trust’s charitable objects.

  12. Winning entries and runners-up will be published in the Friends of Rollright Newsletter, on the Trust website, in a Stones Calendar 2011, and offered as one-off news to local press and media.
  13. Competition judging and prizes

  14. All entries will be judged by a panel of judges who will select winners which in their opinion represent the best images submitted in each of the four classes. Judging criteria will include composition, technique, originality and interpretation.
  15. Prizes for the best entries (to be awarded at the Rollright Forum 2010) will be as follows:

    General status of rules

  16. By entering, entrants agree to be bound by these rules.  The Rollright Trust reserves the right to exclude any entry if it has reason to believe that these rules have been breached. The judges’ decisions will be final and no correspondence can be entered into.  The Rollright Trust reserves the right to cancel or alter any of the rules of this competition at any stage, if deemed necessary.
