Visitor Information - At the StonesWhere are
the stones? The site is located just north of
Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire. Please see the OS map here for further
details.
Parking There is
free parking available in the lay-bys on the road (the Jurassic Way) that runs
alongside the site. Please remember to secure your vehicle and remove all
valuables. Cars have been broken into on a fairly regular basis.
Access All three sites
are no more than five minutes walk from the main parking area. The Kings Men
Stone Circle is a few strides from the main lay-by. It is accessible by wheel
chair although some assistance might be needed to get up the kerb. The King
Stone is over a wobbly wooden fence across an open privately owned field to
which the owner permits access. The Whispering Knights are about five minutes
walk from the main lay-by heading east. After about 100 yards go through a
green farm gate and follow the edge of the field down to the Knights. The field
is privately owned but access to the Knights is
permitted.
Literature There is an excellent full colour leaflet for sale at the
site. It costs just 50p and has been written by George Lambrick of the Oxford
Archaeological Unit. The Right Times is the magazine of the Friends of
the Rollright Stones. A small selection of useful books are also available. We
are also happy to (try and) answer any questions or queries relating to the
site.
Dogs Please note
that dogs, with the exception of guide dogs, are not allowed in the circle.
Please leave them with the warden or tie them to a tree. Thank
you.
Please leave nothing but footprints
and take nothing but photos!
We would
like you to enjoy the site as it is and would ask you to leave it as you find
it, undamaged and peaceful. Erosion is a constant problem and we would
appreciate visitors respecting areas under repair. The site is protected under
the Scheduled Monuments Act, and any person causing damage to the site is
liable to criminal prosecution.
Not at the Stones Toilets There are no toilet facilities at the Stones. (For any kind of
animal!) The nearest public conveniences are at Wyatt's cafe - see
below.
Food and Drink The
nearest food can be found at Wyatts Farm Shop about 1 mile east of the Stones.
Wyatt's have a cafe, toilets and a farm shop. Alternatively The Cross Hands
Inn, which is about 2 miles west of the Rollrights, serves meals/snacks along
with all the usual pub wares
(beer!).
Accommodation There are Tourist Information offices at Chipping Norton and Banbury
which can supply details of B&Bs and guesthouses. The Cross Hands Pub has
camping facilities for those who prefer not to stagger too far! |
